“I haven’t been able to find George anywhere. It seems like he’s skipped town,” Blake said. Lily had gone to Blake after she had seen Pat to tell him what she had learned.

“If that’s true then it certainly places him under suspicion,” Lily said.

“I just wish I could find him to talk to him.”

“Have you spoken to your father about it?”

Blake shook his head. “I haven’t wanted to, but I think I need to. Would you come with me?” he asked.

Lily accompanied Blake upstairs to where Lord Huntingdon’s bedroom was. Lily was surprised to see the man sitting on the edge of the bed with his head clasped in his hands. He sounded as if he was weeping.

“Dad? What’s wrong?” Blake said, rushing into the room.

“I… I…” Lord Huntingdon said, before his gaze fell upon Lily. His mouth hung open and he gasped.

“Gracie… my Gracie is that you?” he asked.

Lily tilted her head and looked at Blake, who averted his eyes from her. “No Dad, it’s not mother. This is my… friend, Lily,” he said, his voice catching a moment before he called her his friend. Lily was flattered and surprised that Lord Huntingdon had taken her for Blake’s mother, and she found herself looking away.

“Mother has been dead for a long time father,” Blake said gently, lowering himself to the floor as he took Lord Huntingdon’s hands. “What are you sad about?”

“I… I’m not sure. Something happened. Something bad, but my head is… my head is so fuzzy and it hurts to think. It’s all in there, but it’s so jumbled and I…” he clamped his eyes shut and held his head in frustration, cursing himself and stomping his feet on the floor. It was distressing to see and Lily wished she could do more to help.

“Dad, Dad it’s okay,” Blake cooed. “Just calm down, okay? I’m right here to help you and listen to you. We’ll get through this together,” he said, and then glanced down. He reached over and picked something up that had been obscured from Lily’s field of vision. “What have you been doing Dad?” Blake asked, holding up a pair of muddy boots. The mud was dried and crusted on the soles of the boots, but it didn’t look more than a day old.

The moment Blake showed Lord Huntingdon the boots, the old man groaned and threw his head back.

“It’s true, it’s true!” he cried.

“What’s true?” Blake asked.

“The murder… I don’t remember it, but I must have done it. Oh… how could I? God forgive me,” he said.

Blake turned to look at Lily, and his eyes were cold with fear.
